う〜ん･･･。これは直訳すると「悪魔と深く青い海の間」ですね。選択肢は2つあるけど、どちらもあまりいい選択肢ではないという状況です。
THE FREE DICTIONARY に、以下の例文がありました。
◇For most people a visit to the dentist is the result of a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea - if you go you suffer, and if you don't go you suffer. 多くの人は、悩ましい選択の結果、歯医者を訪れる。行けば行ったで苦しむし、行かなくても苦しむことになるからだ。
こういう状況を表すイディオムって、結構いろいろあります。私が知っているのでは、between a rock and a hard place とか、catch-22 とかがあります。dilemma とも言えますね。
ちなみに、THE FREE DICTIONARY に書いてあるこの表現の由来によると、devil
は悪魔の意味ではなくて、木造船のある部品のことだったそうです。まあ、悪魔でも十分に嫌な選択肢ですが。
